Homelessness has spiked since the U.S. economic troubles began some years ago. In 2012, Westchester County saw a 24% increase in homelessness. Our Shelter provides 19 men and women with a clean, safe, temporary place to live, learn and grow with some semblance of dignity. We also provide an emergency overnight safe haven for the communities’ most vulnerable people. We provide these medically and emotionally vulnerable human beings with a bed to obtain much needed sleep, food for their empty stomachs, showers to clean the dirt from their bodies and a friendly face that is neither judging nor mocking. Without The Jan Peek House, these men and women would remain on the fringes of society, outcasts from their communities. The faces of the homeless often remain invisible. They are the faces of our seniors, our veterans, our fathers, our mothers and our sons and daughters. They are the faces of people who struggle with mental health, medical illness, loneliness, isolation, substance abuse and fright. The dedicated staff at Jan Peek helps connect these individuals to the services that will enable them to live meaningful, independent lives and that will enable them to rejoin families and friends and give back to their communities. Since its opening in 1988, Jan Peek has helped give a face to human beings and has given people lives to live.
Jan Peek is open 365 days a year 24 hours a day. It is located at 200 North Water Street, Peekskill, N.Y.
